As the 18th BRICS Summit opens in New Delhi (September 12–13, 2026) under India’s Chairship guided by the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” the official release places digital health architecture, AI-enabled healthcare continuum, and accessible health technology directly at the heart of the Global South agenda.

As the Summit brings the Global South into sharp focus, a fundamental question emerges for the global healthcare ecosystem:

Will developing economies remain passive consumers of Western medical innovation, or will they co-create a new paradigm for population-scale, affordable health technology?

With its unique convergence of digital public infrastructure, frugal engineering, and massive demographic diversity, India is positioned at a historic tipping point.

Here are 5 strategic pillars where India can lead the BRICS nations and the broader Global South in healthcare technology transformation:

1. AI-Powered Diagnostics & Clinical Decision Support

Through national initiatives like the IndiaAI Mission and targeted programs under the National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP), India is integrating AI directly into primary healthcare. Deploying automated chest X-ray AI for early TB detection and screening for diabetic retinopathy directly addresses critical specialist shortages across resource-constrained regions.

2. Digital Public-Health Infrastructure

The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) serves as a global architecture blueprint—already crossing over 94 crore Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA) and linking 100+ crore health records. Platforms like eSanjeevani (which has driven over 280 million national telemedicine consultations) demonstrate how open, interoperable health protocols democratize care for millions.

3. Affordable, Frugal MedTech

Under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Medical Devices and Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), India is shifting from basic assembly to indigenous point-of-care innovations. Developing ultra-portable ECGs, low-cost diagnostic kits, and ruggedized equipment designed for non-air-conditioned rural clinics offers direct templates for health systems across Africa and Latin America.

4. Population-Scale Testing & Deployment

With dedicated Centres of Excellence for AI in Healthcare (established at AIIMS Delhi, PGIMER Chandigarh, and AIIMS Rishikesh), India provides an unprecedented living lab for healthtech validation. The sheer scale and ethnic diversity of India's population enable algorithms and clinical tools to be trained, refined, and deployed at a velocity unmatched anywhere else in the Global South.

5. The AI + MedTech Convergence

The future lies at the intersection of hardware, software, and health data governance. Driven by the operationalization of the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act and National Health-AI Strategy frameworks, India is creating the regulatory guardrails needed to build secure, trustworthy, and integrated AI-MedTech devices for cross-border export.

The Strategic Opportunity

The true challenge for the BRICS block is not a lack of healthcare challenges, but the need for sustainable, scalable models to solve them.

Can India move from being a large consumer market for global HealthTech companies to becoming a primary technology partner—and eventually a HealthTech leader—for the Global South?
